Android now controls 38% of the UK smartphone market, leading Apple who have just 23% (source: Kantar WorldPanel Comtech). In the US, Android has a massive 54.7% with iOS (Apple) trailing with just 27.2%. According to Google, 350,000 Android phones are being activated every day.
Android APPs on the whole are making less money currently than Apple grossing just £62m compared to Apple's £1.1bn last year (2010).
Searching for new apps has been criticised on the Android Store. The process of creating and launching an Android App is much easier to do with less quality control than an iPhone App. This means there are simply more Apps on the market and it can be difficult to see the wood for the trees!
In April 2011, Amazon launched its own App Store. "The Amazon store solves some of the problems that the standard marketplace has," said Mr McClelland. "It makes things a bit more exposed and helps search."
